A city in the north-central part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1932. During the Edo period, the city center was a post town on the Nagasaki route, and from the mid-Meiji period onwards it developed into a major coal town in the Chikuho coalfields, with the Chikuho Main Line and the Gotoji Line passing through it. In the past, more than one-third of the Chikuho coal was produced here, mainly by Aso Yoshio and Mitsubishi Namazuta, but all of these mines are now closed. In recent years, many universities and research facilities have been established here, and the city is being developed into a research and education town. An industrial complex has also been developed. Bamboo shoots and grapes are also produced here. Ikawa Onsen is located here. In March 2006, the towns of Eida, Shonai, Honami, and Chikuho in Kaho County were incorporated. 214.07 km2 . Population: 131,492 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
