〘Noun〙 (also "mizuchaya") During the Edo period, these were establishments located on roadsides or within the grounds of temples and shrines where passersby could rest and drink hot tea. Those located in Edo areas such as Ueno Yamashita, Senso-ji Temple, and Yanaka Kasamori Inari employed poster girls to attract customers. Those in Kyoto's Shijo-gawara area came under the control of the Yagura-doshiyori, and were run as a side job by theater-related personnel such as theater owners and tayumoto, who also took care of reservations for box seats for theatergoers and meals. ⇔Oyamachaya. *Haiku poem by Saikaku Daikusu (1677) 10 "The remains of the mizuchaya remain, Sakaigawa River, who is red-faced, and the face of a demon woman."
