Tohoku Expressway - Tohoku Expressway

This expressway runs north and south through the Tohoku region, connecting it to the Tokyo metropolitan area. It is managed by East Nippon Expressway Company. There are two routes: the Hirosaki Line (Tohoku Expressway) and the Hachinohe Line (Hachinohe Expressway). (1) Hirosaki Line: Starting from Nerima Ward, Tokyo, it travels north across the Kanto Plain and connects with the Kita-Kanto Expressway in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture. It then passes through Utsunomiya City and enters the Tohoku region, connecting with the Tohoku Cross-Iwaki Expressway (Ban-etsu Expressway) in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, and the planned Tohoku Chuo Expressway in Fukushima City, before branching off into the Tohoku Cross-Iwaki Expressway (Yamagata Expressway) in Murata Town, Miyagi Prefecture. After passing through Sendai City, it heads north along National Route 4, connecting with the Kamaishi-Akita Line (Akita Expressway) at Kitakami City and Hanamaki City in Iwate Prefecture, passing through Morioka City, connecting with the planned Japan Sea Coast Tohoku Expressway at Kosaka Town in Akita Prefecture, and reaching its terminus in Aomori City. (2) Hachinohe Line: Branching off from the Hirosaki Line at Hachimantai City in Iwate Prefecture, it passes through Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture and reaches Aomori City. The total length of the two lines is 865 km. The section between Nerima Ward, Tokyo and Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture is part of the Tokyo Outer Ring Expressway, so Kawaguchi City is the de facto starting point. There are six lanes between Nerima Ward and Wako City, Saitama Prefecture, and between Kawaguchi City and Utsunomiya City, and four lanes elsewhere. This road has significantly reduced the travel time between the major cities of the Tohoku region and the Tokyo metropolitan area, becoming a major transportation artery and promoting the development of the areas along the road. In addition, together with the Tohoku Transverse Expressway and the Tohoku Chuo Expressway, it will link the various prefectures of the Tohoku region and contribute to the integration of the Tohoku region.

The entire 698 km section of the Hirosaki Line between Nerima and Aomori was opened in 1994. As of December 2011, 81 km of the Hachinohe Line between Hachimantai and Hachinohe and 16 km in Aomori were open. The average daily number of vehicles used in fiscal 2010 was approximately 290,000.
