Kappe Coal Mining - Kappe Saitan

Japanese: カッペ採炭 - カッペさいたん

A type of longwall mining method. A typical modern mining method that uses iron poles to support the face of the mine and prevents the roof from collapsing while digging coal. Kappe (rink bar) is a steel or light alloy beam that can be connected to each other and is placed on the iron poles to support the roof. The adoption of this mining method eliminated the need for poles between the conveyor and the face, making it easier to cut and load coal. Currently, most Japanese coal mines use this method.

長壁式採炭法の一種。炭鉱内の切羽で切羽支持に鉄柱を使い，天盤の崩落を防ぎながら石炭を掘進む代表的な近代採炭法。カッペ Kappe (rink bar)とは相互に連結できる構造を有する鋼製または軽合金製の梁材で，鉄柱上に設けて天盤を支持する。この採炭法の採用によってコンベヤと切羽面との間の柱がなくなり，炭切り，積込みが容易になった。現在，日本の炭鉱のほとんどが採用している。
