Swiss airline based in Zurich. Its airline code is SR and it is abbreviated as SWISSAIR. Its route network covers not only domestic routes but also Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. It began flying to Japan in 1957. It forms the KSSU Group, an agreement organization for aircraft maintenance technology, together with Scandinavian Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and UTA France. It was established in 1931 by the merger of Ad Astra Aero (a flying boat operating company established in 1919, which began commercial air transport between Geneva, Zurich and Nuremberg in 1922) and Basle Air Traffic (established in 1925). Its operations were severely restricted during World War II, but it rapidly opened routes and developed after the war.
