A native of Tsukushi. In the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Saimei (661), he accompanied a relief force from Baekje (Korea) and was captured by the Tang Dynasty (China). In the 3rd year of the reign of Emperor Tenji, he learned of Tang's plans to dispatch troops to Japan, and in order to inform his country, he sold himself to raise the money to send his comrades back home. After 30 years in Tang, he returned in the 4th year of the reign of Empress Jito. He was given rice fields and other goods.
