A method for testing the function of the pancreas as a digestive gland. As an exocrine function (digestive gland function), the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes such as amylase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and lipase, as well as pancreatic juice containing sodium bicarbonate, which results in food digestion in the neutral or slightly alkaline small intestine by the action of the pancreatic digestive enzymes. This exocrine function is regulated by the autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal hormones, and in terms of regulation by gastrointestinal hormones, secretin is important for the secretion of water and bicarbonate, and pancreozymin is important for the secretion of digestive enzymes.

消化腺としての膵臓の機能検査法。膵臓は外分泌機能(消化腺機能)として，アミラーゼ，トリプシン，キモトリプシン，リパーゼなどの消化酵素と炭酸水素ナトリウムを含む膵液を分泌し，その結果，中性ないし弱アルカリ性の小腸内で膵消化酵素が作用して食物の消化が行われる。この外分泌機能は自律神経と消化管ホルモンにより調節されているが，消化管ホルモンによる調節としては，セクレチンが水と炭酸水素塩の分泌に，パンクレオチミンが消化酵素の分泌に重要である。
