A term used by H. Freier to criticize A.F. Vierkant's sociological stance. Vierkant defined formal sociology as a transition from logos science to psychology. He found the limits and order of social phenomena in social-psychological motivational situations, and attempted to resolve sociological structural concepts into a system of possible patterns of human interaction. Freier criticized this type of formal sociology for turning it into an abstract, coexistent theory that was stripped of historical content, and called this stance psychologism. However, in sociology, there is a strong belief that social phenomena can ultimately be explained by human psychology. In that sense, the methodology of the psychologism stance is still widely seen.

A.F.フィーアカントの社会学の立場を批判するのに用いた H.フライアーの用語。フィーアカントは，形式社会学をロゴス科学的なものから，心理学的なものへ転移するものとして方向づけた。彼は社会心理学的な動機的状況に社会現象の限界と秩序を見出し，社会学的な構造的諸概念を，人間相互の可能的な行為様式の体系に解消しようとした。フライアーはこのような形式社会学を，歴史的内容を抜去った抽象的な併存的なものに変ぜしめたとして批判の対象とし，そのような立場を心理学主義と呼んだのである。しかし，社会学には社会現象を究極的には人間の心理によって説明しうるという考え方が根強く存在する。その意味で心理学主義といわれる立場の方法論はなお広くみられるといってよい。
