Tipu Sultān

A Muslim ruler of a small kingdom based in Seringapatam, Mysore, India. He ascended to the throne in 1782 after the death of his father, Hyder Ali, and fought against the Nizam (prince) and the Maratha forces for control of the territory. He also fought the third and fourth Mysore Wars with the British East India Company, and sent envoys to Mauritius and even France itself to seek French support, but failed. In 99, he was defeated and killed in battle in the Fourth Mysore War. After this, Britain began to fully control South India.

インド，マイソールのセリンガパタムを拠点とする小王国のムスリム支配者。1782年父王ハイダル･アーリーの死によって即位し，ニザーム(藩王)，マラーター勢力と領土支配をめぐって抗争した。また，イギリス東インド会社ともマイソール戦争を3次･4次にわたって続け，フランスの支援を得るためにモーリシャスやフランス本国まで使節を送ったが失敗した。99年，第4次マイソール戦争において敗北，戦死した。この後，イギリスは本格的な南インド支配を開始した。
