Polje (English spelling)

A long, narrow depression found in limestone areas that is larger than an uvalle. It is also called a blind valley. It is generally surrounded by steep cliffs and can be up to 100 km long. It has a flatter bottom than an uvalle and may contain a river. Some large uvalles are formed by the merging of several dolines in a row (dissolution poljes), while others are formed by crustal movements, but the latter are larger and have a larger area. The bottom is flat and covered with soil. Its height is determined by the groundwater table, but if the groundwater table is high, a swamp may form at the bottom of the polje.

石灰岩地域にみられる細長い陥没地で，ウバーレより大きいもの。盲谷ともいう。まわりは一般に急崖に囲まれ，長さ 100kmに及ぶものもある。ウバーレより底が平坦で河流が存在する場合がある。一列に並んだ数個のドリーネが結合して生じたウバーレの大きなもの (溶食ポリエ) と地殻運動によって形成されたものがあるが，後者のほうが大規模で面積も広い。底は平坦で土壌におおわれる。高さは地下水面によって決定されるが，地下水面が高い場合，ポリエ底に沼沢が形成されることがある。
