The majority ethnic group in Sri Lanka. The name means "descendants of the lion" in Sinhalese. The population is 10.99 million (1981), accounting for 74% of the total population of 14.85 million. In the Mahavansa (Great Royal History) of the Sinhalese dynasty, written around the 5th century, Vijaya, the eldest son of King Sinhabahu, who killed his father, the lion (Sinha = lion), in northern India and took the throne, was banished from his home country with 700 of his subordinates and washed up on the island of Sri Lanka. It is said that Shakyamuni entered nirvana on the same day, emphasizing the connection between the Sinhalese dynasty and Buddhism. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
