Ephetai - Ephetai

...The ordinary popular tribunal (hēliaia) consisted of 501 people (called hēliastai), and for serious cases, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th tribunals were combined to form 1001, 1501, or 2001 heliaia. There were also the hendeca (11 people), the ephetai (51 people), and smaller tribunals of 201, 401, and so on. The dikastikon 3 obolos (the system of juries) is said to have been started by Pericles.
