Georges Dumézil

Georges Dumézil

French linguist and mythologist. He was also a member of the Académie Française. Using his linguistic talents, he made comparative research that revealed that the myths of Indo-European languages, such as those of India, Iran, Germanic, Celtic, and Roman, were organized based on a common worldview system. This worldview, which he called the "Indo-European trifunctional system," is based on the idea that three principles corresponding to the social roles of (1) priests, (2) warriors, and (3) producers cooperate in all areas of the universe, including the natural and supernatural worlds. He has written over 50 books, including Myths and Epics in three volumes (1968-1973).
