Kakuzan - Kakuzan

Japanese: 廓山 - かくざん
Kakuzan - Kakuzan

A Jodo sect monk in the early Edo period. He went by the name Jorenja Shoyo and his given name was Ichijitsu. He was from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture) and studied under Zono (Kanchi Kokushi), the 12th abbot of Zojo-ji Temple in Edo, and was a learned monk who was well versed in Buddhist studies and Jodo sect studies. In a sect debate (Bujo Mondo) with the Nichiren sect held in the Nishimaru of Edo Castle in 1608 (Keicho 13), he represented the Jodo sect in a showdown against Nikkyo (1560-1620) and others, and emerged victorious. After that, he was trusted by Tokugawa Ieyasu and was invited to Denzuin Temple, the family temple of his birth mother, Odai-no-kata (1528-1602, Mizuno clan), to become the founder of the temple. He was also frequently invited by his teacher, Son'o, to Edo Castle and Sunpu Castle to lecture on the teachings of Ieyasu and Hidetada. After Son'o's death, he became the 13th head priest of Zojoji Temple by order of the shogunate.
