A country in southern Europe, consisting of the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula and islands in the Aegean Sea. Its capital is Athens. It gained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1830. It became a republic in 1924, and in 1935 the monarchy was restored, but was abolished in 1973 and became a republic again. During World War II, it was invaded by Germany and Italy, and was liberated by British forces in 1944. Its main industry is agriculture. It is one of the world's leading maritime nations in terms of ship ownership.
