Kinshoji Temple

This temple is located in Kibe, Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture. It is the head temple of the Shinshu Kibe sect. Its mountain name is Henshozan Tenjingohoin. In 858 (Ten'an 2), Jikaku Daishi (Ennin) built a temple here and enshrined Bishamonten. This was called Tenando, and is said to be the origin of this temple. In 1235 (Kasei 1), Shinran stayed in this hall on his way back to Kyoto from the Kanto region and received a revelation from Bishamonten in a dream. He enshrined Amida Buddha there and made it into a nembutsu hall. According to temple legend, Shinran wrote "Kyogyoshinsho" at this temple.

In 1238 (Rekijin 1), a miraculous event occurred when a heavenly maiden descended from the sky and wove purple and red brocade to make an offering to the principal image of the deity. Emperor Shijo bestowed a plaque reading "Tenjingoho Nishikiori-ji Temple" on the temple and made it a temple built on imperial prayer. The temple's name is said to have been derived from this. In 1573 (Tensho 1), the temple was granted the title of Monzeki. During the battle between Hongan-ji Temple and Oda Nobunaga in the Tensho era (1573-92), the temple claimed to be a follower of the Jodo sect, and became a dual sect scholar.
