A general term for plants of the genus Colocasia in the Araceae family (APG classification: Araceae), which are widely cultivated in the tropical and temperate regions of Oceania and serve as a staple food. Most are edible for their tubers (underground stems), but there are also varieties in which the petioles and leaf blades are edible. Most are C. esculenta (L.) Schott, which includes the so-called taro of Oceania, dasheen of the West Indies, cocoyam of Africa, and Japanese taro. Others include eddoe ( C. antiquorum Schott), native to Asia and cultivated in the West Indies, and C. gigantea Hook.f., native to Malaysia and cultivated in Japan. Indian alocasia and cyrtosperma are also called taro. [Hoshikawa Kiyochika January 21, 2022] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
