The oldest surviving mosque in Damascus, Syria. Built in 706-714 or 715 by the Umayyad caliph Walid I. Built on the site of a former Roman temple sanctuary, it also converted part of the Church of St. John the Baptist. The courtyard is surrounded by arcades with piers and columns on three sides, with two rows of columns running parallel to the qibla wall, and a side aisle crossing them at right angles has a symbolic dome in front of the mihrab. What makes the mosque so famous are the magnificent mosaics that decorate its exterior walls and arcades. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
