A former town in Jinseki-gun, eastern Hiroshima prefecture. Most of the town is mountainous, and forestry is thriving, with timber shipped to Fukuyama and Fuchu, and furniture also produced. Wagyu beef, famous for its Jinseki beef, is also thriving. The Taishaku Gorge area in the northeast is part of Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park. In November 2004, it merged with Yuki-cho, Miwa-cho, and Toyomatsu-mura in Jinseki-gun to become a town, Jinseki-Kogen-cho. Area: 103.98 km2 . Population: 2,958 (2003). 広島県東部,神石郡の旧町。山地が大部分を占め,林業が活発で,福山市や府中市へ木材を積み出し,家具も産する。神石牛として有名な和牛の飼育も盛ん。北東部の帝釈(たいしゃく)峡一帯は比婆道後(ひばどうご)帝釈国定公園に属する。2004年11月神石郡油木町,三和町,豊松村と合併し町制,神石高原町となる。103.98km2。2958人(2003)。
