Japanese: 松島炭田 - まつしまたんでん

Coal fields in the northwest of the Nishisonogi Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture and the islands of Oshima, Sakitojima, Matsushima, Ikeshima, and other islands in the sea to the west, as well as under the seabed. The main coal layer is the Sakito Formation of the Matsushima Group of the Tertiary Oligocene, which contains three coal layers 1 to 5 meters thick. Overall, the area has a dome- or basin-shaped structure at an angle of about 20 degrees with many faults, but the Ikeshima Coal Mine, which is currently in operation, has a stable coal layer with a gentle inclination of about 5 degrees, and produces 1.25 million tons of general coal per year. The coal reserves are said to be about 1,035 million tons.

長崎県西彼杵半島の北西部およびその西方海上の大島，崎戸島，松島，池島などの諸島，ならびに海底下にある炭田。主要夾炭層は第三紀漸新世の松島層群崎戸累層であり，層厚1～5mの炭層が3枚挟有されている。全体的にみると多くの断層を伴った20度前後のドーム，盆状構造であるが，現在稼行している池島炭鉱は炭層傾斜5度前後の安定した緩傾斜で，年産125万tの一般炭を産出している。埋蔵炭量は約10億3500万tといわれている。
