A village in Ishikari District, Ishikari Subprefecture, central Hokkaido. Population 3,994 (1995). Most of the village is located on the plains on the west bank of the Ishikari River, which flows south. It is mostly low-lying marshland and peatland, and has been used for a long time as extensive grassland and pastureland due to constant flooding and inundation. Since 1955, with financing from the World Bank, drainage of the plains, soil addition, and road construction have been carried out, and as a result, nearly two-thirds of the village area, about 50 km2, has been transformed into a rice paddy farming village. The land is divided into regularly-spaced 500m square plots based on the township system of the United States. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
