Yin Yang and the Five Elements

Yin Yang and the Five Elements
The ancient Chinese world view explains the correlation between astronomical phenomena and human affairs. The Yin-Yang theory tries to explain all things in the universe through changes in dualities such as heaven and earth, day and night, cold and heat, and men and women. The theory of the five elements considers wood, fire, earth, metal, and water to be the elements that govern all things, and explains the changes in all things in the universe through their rise and fall. The Yin-Yang theory became an important concept around the 3rd century BC, linked to the I Ching (Book of Changes), and developed into the theory of oneness that places the Tai Chi above Yin and Yang. It also merged with the theory of the five elements, and the originally different origins came to be called Yin-Yang and the five elements. In the early Warring States period, two theories of the five elements were born: the theory of mutual victory (wood overcomes earth, metal overcomes wood, etc.) with the arrangement of earth, wood, metal, fire, and water, and the theory of mutual generation (wood produces fire, fire produces earth, etc.) with the arrangement of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These theories explained the change of dynasties, the cycle of nature, and the spring and autumn disasters.
