Chinese Western-style painter. Born in Yixing County, Jiangsu Province. He visited Japan in 1917 and studied in France from 1919 to 1927. After returning to China, he served as president of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and professor at the National Central University in Nanjing. During that time he painted revolutionary themes, but with the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 he became president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and promoted art education based on socialist realism. 中国の洋画家。江蘇省宜興県の人。1917年日本に遊び,1919年―1927年フランスに留学した。帰国後,北京国立芸術学院院長,南京国立中央大学教授を歴任。その間革命的主題を描いていたが,1949年人民共和国成立とともに中央美術学院院長となり,社会主義リアリズムに基づく美術教育を推進した。伝統的な国画も描いている。
