Syncopation - Syncopation (English spelling)

Syncopation - Syncopation (English spelling)

A musical term. It is translated as "setsubunon." It is an effect that creates irregularity in the rhythm (alternating the positions of strong and weak beats) by changing the regular patterns of accents and beats. There are three main ways to achieve this: (1) Putting an accent mark on the weak beat. (2) Making the strong beat a pause. (3) Extending the weak beat.

Syncopation can be found in medieval music, but in that case it was used for each voice individually to emphasize each voice in contrapuntal music. In music from the 18th century onwards, syncopation was used simultaneously for all voices, with the intention of creating the effect we know today. Syncopation is also the basis of blues, ragtime and jazz.
