Yellow cover. Written by Houseido Kisanji and illustrated by Utamaro's disciple Yukimaro. Published in 1788 (Tenmei 8). 3 volumes, 15 pages in a bag. Minamoto no Yoritomo separates daimyo into two categories, literary and martial, at Hitoana in Fuji, and advises the Nurakura daimyo to strive for both literary and martial arts. The book is a precursor to the Kansei Reforms issued by the senior councilor Matsudaira Sadanobu, who asked for an investigation into the behavior of daimyo, saying, "From those with a stipend of 10,000 koku or more to those below...Since literary, martial, and loyal filial piety have long been the law, we should take them seriously." The satirical parody was a hit, and it became a best-seller, becoming "the biggest craze of all time" (Bakin, Edo Sakusha Burui), but it was soon suppressed, and the author stopped writing yellow cover books.
