It is a language spoken in the Kovt region in northwest Mongolia and in the Xinjiang region of China. It is one of the Mongolian languages and has a speaking population of about 120,000. The Turgut tribe of the Oirats migrated westward in the early 17th century, reaching the lower reaches of the Volga River. These people became the Kalmyks, some of whom returned to Xinjiang in 1771. Oirat is similar to Kalmyk and forms the western dialect of the Mongolian languages. It has its own written literature in its own characters, devised by the lama Zaya Pandi in 1648.
