Black Hills

Japanese: ブラック･ヒルズ（英語表記）Black Hills

A mountain range stretching from western South Dakota to northeastern Wyoming in the United States. It rises 900m above the Great Plains, with its highest peak being Mount Harney (2,206m). The Sioux called it the "Black Hills" because the mountains are covered in pine forests and appear black when viewed from the plains. The Laramie Treaty of 1868, which was concluded as a result of conflicts between white invaders and the Sioux in Wyoming, permanently designated the entire area of present-day South Dakota west of the Missouri River as a Sioux reservation.

アメリカ合衆国サウス･ダコタ州西部からワイオミング州北東部にかけて広がる山地。グレート･プレーンズから900mの比高をなしてそびえ，最高峰はハーニー山(2206m)。平地から見ると山地を松の森林がおおい黒く見えることから，スー族によって〈黒い丘〉と呼ばれていた。ワイオミングでの白人侵入者とスー族の衝突の結果結ばれた1868年のララミー協定で，ミズーリ川以西の現在のサウス･ダコタ州全域は永久にスー族の保留地とされた。
