A type of cart, a two-wheeled vehicle that can be attached to the rear of a bicycle. It appears to have been invented in Japan in the early Taisho period when domestically produced bicycles began to spread, and its name is a Japanese-English word meaning rear car. It replaced the previous carts such as large eight-wheeled carts, and was widely used in cities and farming and fishing villages, as it was compatible with the development of roads and made small transportation easier. There was a shop that manufactured handcarts inside a bicycle repair shop. It had a frame made of iron pipes and used wheels similar to those of bicycles, but the standard size was 26 inches (about 66 centimeters) in diameter and 2.5 inches (about 6.4 centimeters) thick. It could also be used by hand when detached from a bicycle, and was long used by farmers as an indispensable tool for transporting threshers. However, with the spread of three-wheeled cars after World War II and the subsequent spread of small trucks, it was rarely made in the early 1960s.
