〘noun〙 (adjective) 1. A disposition to be hypersensitive to external stimuli, changes in the environment, and physical abnormalities. Generally speaking, it refers to the quality of being hypersensitive, or the state of being such a disposition, and is different from neurasthenia and neurosis, which appear as pathological symptoms. *Tosei Shosei Kishitsu (1885-86) by Tsubouchi Shoyo, vol. 1: "The way his hair is curly is typical of a nervous person." 2. The state of being meticulous and careful in doing things, even down to the smallest details. It also generally refers to the disposition of worrying about small details that do not need to be a concern. *Sanshiro (1908) by Natsume Soseki, vol. 7: "He's not a family-oriented person. Instead, when it comes to academics, he's extremely nervous.
