Shibuya Minoru

Shibuya Minoru

Film director. Real name Katayama Minoru. Born January 2, 1907, in Shichikencho, Asakusa Ward, Tokyo (now Asakusa, Taito Ward, Tokyo). Dropped out of Keio University's English department. Joined Shochiku's Kamata studio in 1930, and worked as an assistant to Naruse Mikio, Ozu Yasujiro, and Gosho Heinosuke, before becoming a director in 1937. His first film, "Do Not Tell Your Wife" (1937), was already sophisticated and an excellent piece of ironic family comedy. After that, he released a series of excellent works that looked at family life with cool, satirical humor rather than warm laughter, even though Shochiku Ofuna films specialized in home dramas. His works, such as "Mother and Child" (1938), "All About Chaos" (1950), "Closed Today" and "Modern People" (1952), "Medal" (1954), "Justice" and "Crazy Village" (1957), are excellent works that we would like to pass on to future generations as they vividly depict the lives of ordinary people in postwar Japan. He passed away on December 20, 1980.
