Born: August 25, 1819, Glasgow
[Died] July 1, 1884. Chicago. Founder of the famous Pinkerton Private Detective Agency. Arrived in the United States in 1842 and settled in Chicago. From 1846 onwards, he served as deputy sheriff for Kane and Cook counties, before joining the Chicago Police Department. In 1850, he left the Chicago Police Department to establish a private detective agency. He achieved success mainly in railroad theft cases, and in February 1861 he uncovered a plot to assassinate Lincoln, and during the Civil War he worked as a spy for the Union Army. After the war, he was active in opposition to the labor union movement during the strike of 1877, which earned him resentment.
