Norwegian novelist. Born in Denmark, he moved to Norway, his mother's homeland, at the age of 30. His first novel written in Norwegian, The Landed Sailor (1931), was the first in a series in which the protagonist Espen, who escaped from his ship, explores and analyzes the psychological factors behind his murder of his beloved friend. In other works, such as A Vanished Dream (1944), written in Sweden during the Nazi era, Alice and Her Lovers (1949) and The Werewolf (1958), written after the war, he constantly explores the dark impulses lurking deep within human beings. ノルウェーの小説家。デンマーク生れだが，30歳で母の故郷ノルウェーに移る。ノルウェー語で書いた最初の小説《陸に上がった水夫》(1931)は船から逃げた主人公エスペンが敬愛する友人を殺した行為の心理的要因を自ら探索･分析する連作の第1作。ナチス時代スウェーデンで書いた《消えたのは夢》(1944)，戦後の《アリスと恋人たち》(1949)，《人狼》(1958)など，常に人間の内奥にひそむ暗い衝動を探る。【毛利三弥】
