1899‐1965 Norwegian novelist. Born in Denmark, he moved to Norway, his mother's homeland, at the age of 30. His first novel written in Norwegian, The Landed Sailor (1931), was the first in a series in which the protagonist Espen, who escaped from his ship, explores and analyzes the psychological factors behind his murder of his beloved friend. In other works, such as A Vanished Dream (1944), written in Sweden during the Nazi era, Alice and Her Lovers (1949) and The Werewolf (1958), written after the war, he constantly explores the dark impulses lurking deep within human beings.
