[Born] Jungjong 30 (1535) [Died] King Seonjo 20 (1587) A politician of the Joseon Dynasty (Yi Dynasty), Korea. Born in Cheongsong-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. His pen name was Bangsuk, and his pen name was Sonam. He was the younger brother of Queen Insun, the wife of King Myeongjong. In 1562 (the 17th year of the reign of King Myeongjong), he passed his literary examination and held important posts in the royal court. In 1575 (the 8th year of the reign of King Seonjo), he came into conflict with Kim Hyo-won, a rising sarim, and split into the East and West parties, marking the beginning of party strife and the beginning of party politics in the Joseon Dynasty. Sim Ui-gyeon's party was the Hunku faction, known as Seo-in, and Kim Hyo-won's party was known as Dong-in. After that, despite the mediation of Yi Yul-gok, the two parties continued to fight fiercely for power. However, in 1575, Dong-in came to rule, and Sim Ui-gyeon was dismissed.
