…He was born into a large Protestant land-owning noble family in northern Hungary. After his father was defeated in an anti-Habsburg conspiracy, he went to Transylvania in 1670, where he took command of the volunteer army Kuruc in 1678. He occupied northern Hungary in a battle between September and November of that year, and was elected Grand Duke (known as the Thökely Revolt).
