Moral education - shuushinkyoiku

Before World War II, moral education in modern Japan was centered on ethics classes in elementary and junior high schools. Ethics classes based on Confucian morals such as loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, and righteousness were established in elementary schools in 1880, and with the issuance of the Imperial Rescript on Education in 1890, the philosophy was set as a view of the family and nation centered on loyalty to the Emperor and patriotism. After textbooks were nationalized in 1903 (nationally designated textbooks), the content became even more standardized. In 1901, ethics classes were also established in junior high schools. Moral education was considered the core of national education and formed the spiritual pillar of imperial nationalism. It was abolished in December 1945 by order of the occupying forces.

第２次大戦前，近代日本の小・中学校で修身科を中心として行われた道徳教育。忠孝仁義など儒教的道徳に立つ修身科が1880年小学校に設けられ，1890年教育勅語の発布により忠君愛国を軸とする家族国家観がその理念とされた。1903年教科書国定化（国定教科書）以後その内容はいっそう画一化された。1901年中学校にも修身科を設置。修身教育は国民教育の中核とされ，天皇制国家主義の精神的支柱を形成した。1945年12月占領軍の指令により廃止。
