The minimum amount of energy metabolism required to maintain vital functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and body temperature even when at rest. Basal metabolic rate varies from person to person, but the standard daily basal metabolic rate for each age and sex is calculated by multiplying the basal metabolic rate by body weight. Basal metabolic rate normally increases as we grow, peaking in our teens and then decreasing with age, but because most of the energy used in basal metabolism is consumed by muscle, people with more muscle mass have a higher basal metabolic rate. For this reason, it is said that by maintaining muscle through moderate exercise, basal metabolism can be maintained and a body that consumes a lot of energy and is less likely to gain weight can be created.

安静状態でも呼吸、心臓の動き、体温維持などの生命活動を維持するために消費される、必要最小限のエネルギー代謝量。基礎代謝量には個人差があるが、年齢・性別ごとの標準的な1日当たりの基礎代謝量は、基礎代謝基準値×体重で算出される。基礎代謝量は通常、成長するに従って高まり、10代をピークに加齢と共に低下するが、基礎代謝におけるエネルギーの多くが筋肉で消費されるため、筋肉量が多い人ほど基礎代謝量は高くなる。そのため、適度な運動により筋肉を維持し続けることで基礎代謝を維持し、エネルギー消費の多い太りにくい体質を作ることができると言われている。
