A general term for birds of the passerine family Prunellidae, or one of these species. Birds of this family are 15 to 18 cm long. They are terrestrial and have thin, pointed beaks and sturdy legs. Their plumage is often a blend of brown or gray-brown, and the sexes are the same color. Twelve species are found in the mountains of Europe, North Africa, and Asia, and in winter they either migrate vertically or relatively short distances. The alpine accentor Prunella collaris (illustration) is 18 cm long, has a blend of dark brown coloring, fine white spots on the throat, and two thin white bands on the wings.
