White sea cucumber (Paracaudina chilensis ransonneti)
This sea cucumber (illustration) is an echinoderm of the Holothuriana family, and has neither warts nor tube feet. It is found from southern Hokkaido to the Tohoku region. It is spindle-shaped, measuring about 10 cm in length, with a short tail-like rear. Its entire body is reddish-white and slightly transparent, allowing the internal organs to be seen through the torso. The surface of its body is smooth but has many horizontal wrinkles. It has 15 tentacles. Tiny confetti-like bone fragments are buried in its skin. It burrows diagonally into the sand with its anus facing upwards, and raises a small hill about 5 cm high on the sand.
