Shinji [town] - Shinji

Japanese: 宍道[町] - しんじ

An old town in Yatsuka County, eastern Shimane Prefecture, on the southern shore of Lake Shinji. It flourished as a post town for worshippers at Izumo Taisha Shrine, and is home to the old head inn. The Sanin Main Line runs through the town, and the Kisuki Line branches off here. There is a spinning machine factory here. Kimachi stone is a local specialty. Many people commute to Matsue and Izumo. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Matsue City along with Kashima Town, Shimane Town, Mihonoseki Town, Tamayu Town, Yatsuka Town, and Yakumo Village in Yatsuka County. 60.17 ^km2 . 9,557 people (2003).
