An old town in Yatsuka County, eastern Shimane Prefecture, on the southern shore of Lake Shinji. It flourished as a post town for worshippers at Izumo Taisha Shrine, and is home to the old head inn. The Sanin Main Line runs through the town, and the Kisuki Line branches off here. There is a spinning machine factory here. Kimachi stone is a local specialty. Many people commute to Matsue and Izumo. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Matsue City along with Kashima Town, Shimane Town, Mihonoseki Town, Tamayu Town, Yatsuka Town, and Yakumo Village in Yatsuka County. 60.17 km2 . 9,557 people (2003). 島根県東部,宍道湖南岸にある八束(やつか)郡の旧町。出雲大社参拝人の宿場町として栄え,旧本陣もある。山陰本線が通じ,木次(きすき)線が分岐。精紡機製造の工場がある。来待(きまち)石を特産。松江,出雲両市への通勤者も多い。2005年3月八束郡鹿島町,島根町,美保関町,玉湯町,八束町,八雲村と松江市へ編入。60.17km2。9557人(2003)。
