Year of death: 21 December 1429 (25 January 1429) Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. Military commander of the Muromachi period. Eldest son of Kitabatake Akiyasu, governor of Ise Province. Became governor of Ise Province in 1402 (Oei 9). The character "Mitsu" in Mitsumasa's name is thought to be one of the characters in the name of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, but he never compromised with the Muromachi Shogunate throughout his life, and continued to press for the fulfillment of the conditions for the unification of the Northern and Southern Courts. To Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori, who aimed for the stability of the Shogunate system, Mitsumasa's existence was as much a threat as the Kamakura Kubo, and two military clashes occurred. The first was in 1414 (Oei 21). Mitsumasa raised an army in protest against the enthronement of Emperor Gokomatsu of the Jimyoin line and his son Emperor Shoko, and together with the local clans of Sawa and Akiyama of Uda County in Yamato, resisted the Shogunate forces, and eventually made peace. The second was in 1428 (Shocho 1). He rebelled against the agreement that Emperor Go-Hanazono (the adopted son of Emperor Go-Komatsu) would succeed Emperor Shoko, and supported Prince Ogura (Seisho), the grandson of Emperor Go-Kameyama, the last Emperor of the Southern Court. However, to no avail, Mitsumasa was defeated and killed in the battle of Iwata, Ano-gun (Tsu City) on December 21 of the same year, and the power of the Ise kokushi declined for a time.
