Autonomic functions are also called vegetative functions or involuntary functions, and refer to the most basic functions of living organisms, such as circulation, respiration, digestion, excretion, metabolism, secretion, body temperature, and reproduction. Autonomic functions are primarily regulated by the autonomic nervous system and hormones to constantly maintain the internal environment of the body in an optimal state for sustaining life, but they can also be regulated in part by the motor nervous system. In addition to regulation by nerves and hormones, autonomic functions can also be automatically regulated by the state of the organs themselves involved in the autonomic functions, such as when an increase in blood flow to the heart increases its activity.
