A port city in southern Italy facing the Strait of Messina at the northeastern tip of Sicily. Ferries operate between the city and Reggio di Calabria on the mainland. The city exports olives and wine, and has industries such as silk weaving, food processing, and cement. It has a 12th-century cathedral, a church, a university (founded in 1548), and a marine biology institute. It originated as a Greek colony called Zancle, and flourished under Islamic and Norman rule. It was mainly under Spanish rule from 1282 to 1860. Although most of the city was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1908 and was bombed during World War II, many historical buildings remain.
