Yamagata City is located in the southeast of Yamagata Prefecture, occupying the southern part of the Yamagata Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. The city center developed on the alluvial fan of Mamigasaki River, and since the Middle Ages it has developed as a castle town and a post station where the three main roads of Ushu, Rokujirigoe, and Sasaya intersect. It was also known as a place where safflowers were collected and distributed, and where paulownia paper and Japanese umbrellas were produced. The Ou Main Line (Yamagata Shinkansen), Yamagata Expressway, National Routes 13 and 48 pass through the city, and the Senzan Line and Aterazawa Line branch off from it. Shopping districts are formed around Nanokamachi and Tokamachi. There is an industrial park on the Tachiyagawa River, where castings with a history of about 900 years, metal machinery, electrical equipment, precision machinery, and other products are produced, and the city is second in the prefecture in terms of the value of manufactured goods shipped (2003). Rice, hops, grapes, and cherries are cultivated, and livestock such as Yamagata beef is also thriving. The city has Zao Onsen, famous for skiing and frost-covered trees, in the southeast, and Yamadera in the northeast.
