Three-sided stone

Japanese:
Three-sided stone

This refers to irregularly shaped gravel whose surface has been polished by wind erosion, giving it a glossy appearance, and which usually has three edges or two or three flat surfaces.

This phenomenon is seen in windy desert regions and coastal sand dunes, where sand carried by the prevailing winds acts like a file to wear away the surface of the gravel. Many triangular stones have been discovered in the Mojave Desert in the United States. In Japan, magnificent triangular stones have been discovered where gravel on the coastal terraces of Omaezaki has been polished by the dune sand that has risen up onto it. In sand dune areas along the Sea of Japan, magnificent triangular stones are sometimes formed when gravel from the base or gravel that has been carried there is polished by the sand. Such gravel can also be found in the Tottori Sand Dunes. They can also be found outside of sand dune areas in places with strong winds and an abundance of gravel, such as the crater floor of Mt. Mihara.
