A manufacturer of audio and visual equipment that expanded mainly overseas. Akai Press Industry was founded by Masukichi Akai in 1923. In 1946, it was established as Akai Denki. It expanded from the audio business to the visual business, but in the early 1980s, the company fell into a management crisis due to poor sales of VTRs to Europe, and became a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Semi-Tech Group. Over 90% of the company's products were exported overseas, and the company also handled electronic equipment and water purifiers in other fields, but in November 2000 it filed for civil rehabilitation and was effectively bankrupt. 海外を中心に展開した音響・映像機器メーカー。1923年赤井桝吉がアカイプレス工業を創業。1946年赤井電機として設立。音響事業から映像事業へと展開するが，1980年代初頭のヨーロッパ向けVTR販売の不振から経営危機に陥り，香港のセミ=テック社のグループ傘下企業となる。海外輸出比率は90％を超え，他分野の電子機器，整水器も手がけたが，2000年11月に民事再生法を申請し事実上倒産。
