A manufacturer of audio and visual equipment that expanded mainly overseas. Akai Press Industry was founded by Masukichi Akai in 1923. In 1946, it was established as Akai Denki. It expanded from the audio business to the visual business, but in the early 1980s, the company fell into a management crisis due to poor sales of VTRs to Europe, and became a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Semi-Tech Group. Over 90% of the company's products were exported overseas, and the company also handled electronic equipment and water purifiers in other fields, but in November 2000 it filed for civil rehabilitation and was effectively bankrupt.
