Ol'ga (English spelling)
Born: Around 890. Pskov
Died in 969. Wife of Prince Igor of Kiev (son of Rurik), Kievan Rus. She was said to have been of low-class peasant origin. After her husband Igor was murdered in 945 for his revenge against the Drevlians, she became regent in place of her infant son Svyatoslav. In revenge against the Drevlians, she burned down their capital the following year, enslaved their inhabitants, and oppressed the tribes in the conquered territories by forcing them to pay harsh tribute. By unifying the Slavic tribes, she significantly strengthened her princely power, did not tolerate disputes over succession, and ruled until her son came of age in 964. In 955 (some say 957), during a visit to Constantinople to promote trade relations with the Byzantine Empire, she was baptized according to the Orthodox rite and given the name Elena. She was canonized after her death.
