In Spain, a distinctive national style was established by Cristóbal de Morales (c. 1500-53) and Victoria, and in the field of instrumental music, vihuela music became popular. Following the example of other European countries, England developed its own unique Renaissance style, which resulted in the creation of anthems and motets by Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-85), W. Bird, O. Gibbons, and others, madrigals by Thomas Morley (c. 1557-1602), Thomas Weelkes (c. 1575-1623), John Wilbye (1574-1638), and other such works.
