Class: Echinodermata, Class: Echinoidea, Order: Diadema, Family: Diadema. The shell is 5-9 cm in diameter and thin and fragile. The spines are 5-6 times longer than the shell diameter, hollow, and break easily. There are variations such as purple and striped ones. The shell's outer skin is dark purple-black, with a blue ring surrounding the anus, from which blue lines radiate along the intertrochanteric zone. The peristomal area on the underside is reddish. The tip of the anal cone is dark purple. It is easily distinguished from the closely related diadema, which has a bright orange anal cone. It is widely distributed from central Honshu southwards.

棘皮動物門ウニ綱ガンガゼ目ガンガゼ科。殻は直径5～9cmで薄くもろい。とげは長さが殻径の5～6倍もあり，中空で折れやすい。紫色や縞のあるものなど変異がある。殻の外皮は暗紫黒色で，肛門を取巻いて青い輪があり，これから間歩帯に沿って青色の線が放射状に伸びている。下面の周口部は赤みがかっている。肛門錐の先端は暗紫色。近縁種のガンガゼの肛門錐は鮮かなオレンジ色をしているので容易に区別できる。本州中部以南に広く分布する。
