An analytical term in the theory of consumer choice (behavior). When the price of a good remains constant and a consumer's income changes, the amount of each good purchased must change in order to maintain the same level of utility as before. The "income effect" shows how the amount of each good purchased must change when the price of a good changes while the consumer's income remains constant. In the diagram, the demand for food and clothing is determined at E , the point of intersection between the budget line AB and the indifference curve U.
