Fence - fence

Japanese:
Fence - fence
It can also be read as "ki". It mainly refers to ancient defensive structures, and in the Wamyō Ruijūshō it is written "weaving giant trees", meaning a castle built on trees. Castles are also called "ki", and although the strict distinction between castles and saku is unclear, there is a theory that castles are built on earth and saku are built on trees. It is said that the first saku was built in 647 (the 3rd year of the Taika era) as a defense against the Emishi, when a saku (fence) was built and a saku (fence gate) was placed. It can be found throughout the Nara and Heian periods. Also, in the Kamakura and Sengoku periods, the character saku was used for castles and battlefields, for things like yarirai (arrow railings). In documents, the names of saku such as Iwafune, Tokisara, Dewa, Taga, and Nitta can be seen, but with a few exceptions, it is difficult to identify them on the ground.
